This profession is regulated: access is decided not by an employer but by a competent authority — the one in your federal state. The yardstick is § 9 BQFG: your qualification counts as equivalent if there are no substantial differences from the German training.
Teaching is state competence in its purest form: the Ministry of Education of the federal state where you want to teach decides, by its own rules. The German benchmark is unusual and trips up most applicants: training in TWO subjects is required, plus the Referendariat, the preparatory service. A single-subject degree from abroad therefore almost always meets a substantial difference.

What to do
- Choose the federal state and approach its Ministry of Education — requirements differ markedly between states.
- Check the subject combination: a missing second subject is the commonest reason for partial recognition.
- An adaptation course or follow-up qualification in the missing area, often with a high language requirement.
- Consider the lateral entry route in parallel: for shortage subjects — mathematics, physics, computer science — many states hire without full teaching recognition.
Where people get stuck
The mistake is starting the procedure in the wrong state. Unlike the Approbation there is no nationwide effect here: recognition from state A obliges state B to nothing. Decide where you want to live first, then apply.
If you still need to immigrate
For a visa or the Blue Card a recognised or comparable higher-education degree is enough (§ 18 (3) no. 2 AufenthG) — in practice anabin H+ or a ZAB statement. For the Blue Card the ZAB issues the statement in two weeks instead of three months.

I studied only one subject — is it hopeless?
No, but that is the core of the assessment. German teacher training is built on two subjects; if one is missing, partial recognition with a requirement to make it up usually follows. For shortage subjects lateral entry is often the faster route.
Does recognition apply throughout Germany?
No. Schooling is state law, and recognition takes effect in the issuing state. On moving, a new procedure is the rule rather than the exception.
Can I teach at a private school without recognition?
Private schools have more latitude in hiring but are bound by their state’s approval conditions — which regularly include equivalent teaching qualifications among the staff. Ask the specific school and the school supervisory authority, not the internet.
