eVB-Nummer: Electronic Insurance Confirmation
A 7-character code from your insurer. Get it online before visiting the Zulassungsstelle — without it, no number plates will be issued.
WHAT TO DO
What is it and when to act?
The eVB-Nummer is a mandatory code from your insurer — without it the Zulassungsstelle will refuse to register your car. Obtain it after signing the Kaufvertrag (you need the VIN) and before going to the Zulassungsstelle. The whole process takes 5–10 minutes online.
Where to get it
Compare prices on Check24 or go directly to an insurer (HUK, ADAC, Allianz, etc.). After payment, the eVB code appears in your online account or is emailed to you.
Common mistakes
I arrived at the Zulassungsstelle without the eVB — I had the payment receipt but not the actual code. Had to call the insurer from the waiting room. Write down the 7-character code separately and don't rely on the email.
I took out insurance with a start date one week away to 'save money'. The eVB was issued with a future start date — the Zulassungsstelle refused it: insurance must be active from the registration date itself.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the eVB-Nummer and why do I need it? ▾
Elektronische Versicherungsbestätigung — a 7-character alphanumeric code confirming that your vehicle is insured. It is transmitted to the Zulassungsstelle at registration. Without it, no plates can be issued (§23 FZV). The code is usually valid for 30 days from issue.
When do I get the eVB-Nummer — before or after buying the car? ▾
Before visiting the Zulassungsstelle, but after signing the Kaufvertrag: the insurer needs the VIN to issue the policy. Most insurers issue the eVB instantly online once the first payment is made. Save the 7-character code separately — don't rely on the email alone.
Which insurance to get — Haftpflicht only or also Kasko? ▾
The Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung (third-party liability) is the legal minimum. For used cars up to €10,000, Haftpflicht + Teilkasko is sensible (covers theft, fire, natural events, glass). Vollkasko makes sense for new or expensive cars.
