An honest answer instead of a sales pitch: a student with a laptop and a suitcase usually does not need it — liability insurance suffices. A furnished family flat almost always does.

WHAT TO DO
- €Contents insurance ~€3–7 per month for 60–80 m²
› Details and tips
The insurers quick formula: 650 € per square metre. At 60 m² that is 39 000 € — more than you think until you count.
The landlord furniture in a furnished flat is his problem, not yours. Your Hausrat covers only your own property.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is my bicycle covered? ▾
In the base tariff only when stolen from locked rooms. Outside theft needs the bicycle clause — check the limit and the 10pm-6am night window.
I rent a room in a shared flat — do I need my own policy? ▾
Your flatmate policy does not cover your things. Count honestly: electronics, clothes, bike — if the sum would hurt, your own policy at 3–5 € solves it.
How does Hausrat differ from Haftpflicht? ▾
Liability pays for damage to OTHERS; contents insurance pays for YOUR belongings (fire, pipe water, burglary, storm). Two different policies that do not replace each other.
Furnished rental — what does it cover? ▾
Only YOUR things. The landlord furniture is his risk. For a furnished room, contents insurance is often genuinely unnecessary.
