The first thing after a withdrawal is working out what actually happened. In everyday speech it is all losing your licence; in German law two distinct mechanisms sit behind it with different consequences, and confusing them costs months.
Licence withdrawn: who decided, and how that differs from a driving ban
Withdrawal of a licence and a temporary driving ban are different things with different consequences. After withdrawal the document does not return with the calendar: it has to be granted anew.

› Details and tips
Establish first which of the two documents you are holding. Everything else follows from it: a judgment sets the blocking period, an authority decision sets the conditions for a fresh grant. People wait months for a deadline that does not exist in their case.
I was sure my licence would simply come back after six months, as with a driving ban. In fact the entitlement had been withdrawn and there was nothing to return: I had to apply for a fresh grant and prove my fitness to drive.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does withdrawal differ from a driving ban? ▾
A driving ban is temporary: the licence is handed in for a set period and returned afterwards without further procedure. Withdrawal ends the entitlement itself: the document does not come back, and a fresh grant is needed later, often with an aptitude assessment.
Who can withdraw a licence? ▾
Two routes exist. A court does so in criminal proceedings where the offence relates to driving. The licensing authority acts separately: if someone proves unfit to drive, withdrawal is mandatory for the authority rather than a matter of discretion.
What happens as points accumulate? ▾
The points system is tiered, and the law requires notice that on reaching eight points the licence will be withdrawn. So it does not arrive out of nowhere: the warnings come earlier, and they are the last practical moment to react.
What is the blocking period? ▾
Where a court withdraws the licence it simultaneously sets a period during which no new one may be granted. The law states a range from six months to five years and, in extreme cases, permits a permanent block.
