How the assessment works and what is evaluated

The assessment combines a medical examination, performance tests and an interview with a psychologist. What is evaluated is not remorse but whether behaviour has changed and why that change will hold.

WHAT TO DO

DOCUMENTS 3

The assessment is more transparent than its reputation suggests. It is not an honesty test and not an exam with correct answers: the assessors answer the questions set by the authority, relying on documents and on how coherently a person explains the incident and the changes since.

Max recommends:

I had prepared phrasings that sounded good, and the interview quickly showed they did not match the dates in my own documents. The second time I simply told it as it was, and the conversation went entirely differently.

Lea recommends:

Clarify the abstinence proof requirements in the first week. It is the one part that cannot be accelerated: the period runs by the calendar, and trying to catch up shortly before the appointment usually ends in a postponement.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does the assessment consist of? ▾

Usually three parts: a medical examination with laboratory values, performance tests of attention and reaction, and an interview with a psychologist. The regulation prescribes the qualifications required of the assessors, and the scope follows the questions put by the authority.

What is actually evaluated in the interview? ▾

How comprehensible and credible the causes of the incident are, and whether a stable change of behaviour exists. Promises never to do it again show nothing in themselves: what counts is a coherent account of what changed in daily life and why it will last.

What is proof of abstinence? ▾

In some cases documented abstinence over a defined period is required. The requirements for duration, laboratory and procedure are strict, and such a period cannot be created retroactively. That is why the conditions are clarified at the very start.

Is early preparation worth it? ▾

Yes, above all because part of the requirements is bound to time. Abstinence evidence, courses or counselling cannot be caught up in the week before the appointment. Planning matters more here than memorising correct answers, which do not exist.
