After approval: income, co-payment and returning to work

During rehabilitation a benefit usually replaces your income, while part of the cost stays with you. Returning to work can be gradual — and that is a procedure of its own.

WHAT TO DO

DOCUMENTS 3

Approval is not the end of the route but the start of a phase with three practical questions: what to live on, what to co-pay and how to return to work. There is a fourth detail almost nobody warns about in advance: under certain conditions the rehabilitation application itself counts by law as a pension claim as well.

The discharge report is the most useful document in the whole story. It sets out what you can and cannot do, and both employers and later applications rely on it. Ask for a copy immediately, not six months later.

I only learned about the pension-claim rule while the process was running. Nothing bad happened, but an unexpected letter about pensions in the middle of treatment threw me for a week. Knowing in advance is better.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What do I live on during rehabilitation? ▾

Once continued pay from your employer is exhausted, a benefit from the funding body replaces your income — with pension insurer rehabilitation that is Uebergangsgeld. Who pays and how much depends on your insurance status, so settle this before arrival rather than at the clinic.

Do I have to contribute anything myself? ▾

As a rule yes: a co-payment applies for each calendar day of the service. For rehabilitation directly following hospital treatment, the law limits it to a maximum of fourteen days. Grounds for exemption and reduction exist, and you ask about them beforehand, not after the invoice.

What is a gradual return to work? ▾

The law provides that people still unfit for work but able to perform part of their previous role resume it step by step with increasing load. The aim is a more durable return to working life than a direct jump back to full time.

Is it true that a rehabilitation application can become a pension claim? ▾

That rule genuinely exists. The law states that an application for rehabilitation counts as an application for a pension where the insured person has reduced earning capacity and success is not expected or the measures were unsuccessful. It is not a trap but an automatic effect worth knowing in advance.
