259 β¬ per month per child, regardless of income. Who qualifies, how to apply online with the Familienkasse and why 6 months is the critical deadline.
β Checked: 18/07/2026
Child benefit in Germany is paid for every child regardless of household income β it is not means-tested social assistance but a payment to everyone meeting the conditions. For foreign nationals what decides it is not earnings but the residence permit and where the child lives.

βΊ More about this route
This two-step route covers both sides: exactly who qualifies including the question of residence status, and how to apply to the family benefits office without losing months through errors in the package.
The biggest trap concerns the deadline: backdating is limited to a restricted period before the application. Waiting longer means losing money permanently β which is why the application belongs filed immediately after a birth or a move rather than once every document is assembled.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
All possible documents for this route
- Tax IDs of parent and child
- Birth certificate (translated if needed)
- Residence permit
- Proof of education for 18+
WHERE PEOPLE MOST OFTEN LOSE MONEY AND TIME
- Delaying the application. Backdating covers only a limited period; everything before that is lost.
- Waiting for a finalised residence permit. You can apply and supply documents later; months spent waiting do not come back.
- Not reporting a childβs move or a change of status. Data is cross-checked and overpayments are reclaimed.
- Assuming a high income disqualifies you. The payment does not depend on earnings at all β that is what distinguishes it from social assistance.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ROUTE
Does the payment depend on income?βΎ
No. Unlike means-tested benefits, child benefit is paid regardless of parental earnings. On very high incomes the tax office checks whether the benefit or the tax allowance is more favourable and applies the better one automatically.
Do foreign nationals receive it?βΎ
In many cases yes, with the residence permit deciding: it must permit employment or fall within the categories the law names. Where the child lives also matters.
Until what age is it paid?βΎ
Until adulthood without further conditions, and beyond that during training, study or certain periods of seeking a place, up to the statutory limit. Special rules without an upper age limit apply to children with disabilities.
How quickly does the first payment arrive?βΎ
Processing takes weeks, longer with an incomplete package. So file immediately and supply what is missing afterwards β timely filing preserves entitlement for the preceding months.
