COMPARISON
Internet: order a month before you move
The most common newcomer mistake: ordering internet after moving in. DSL activation in Germany takes 2–6 weeks, so order as soon as your rental contract is signed. Mistake number two: judging by the promo price — almost every tariff roughly doubles after the first months.
How it works
- 1 Right after signing the Mietvertrag, check availability at your address: DSL, cable (Vodafone) or fibre.
- 2 Compare tariffs by the average price over 24 months, not the promo price.
- 3 Order with activation date = move-in date. Technician visits are weekdays only.
- 4 You don't have to rent a router: Routerfreiheit (§73 TKG) — using your own is your legal right.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get internet connected in Germany?
DSL: 2–6 weeks (line activation, sometimes a technician visit). Cable: 1–2 weeks if the socket exists. Fibre: a week to months. A 5G router works from day one — a good temporary solution.
Can I get an internet contract without SCHUFA history?
Large providers run a SCHUFA check, but newcomers without history are usually accepted. If declined: prepaid mobile internet or no-credit-check tariffs.
What is the minimum contract term for internet in Germany?
The standard is 24 months, but under §56 TKG a 12-month option must also be offered. After the initial term the contract becomes monthly with 1-month notice (TKG reform 2021).
What happens to my internet contract when I move?
The provider "moves with you". If they cannot deliver the same service at the new address, you have a special termination right with 1 month notice (§60 TKG). Report the move at least 4 weeks ahead.
My internet is slower than promised in the contract — what can I do?
Measure with the official tool breitbandmessung.de (at least 10 measurements over 2 days). With systematic underperformance you may reduce payment proportionally or terminate (§57 TKG).
Do I have to rent the router from my provider?
No. Routerfreiheit applies: the provider must give you access credentials for your own device. Your own Fritz!Box (~€150) beats €5–7/month rental within two years.
Are there internet tariffs without a minimum term?
Yes — flex tariffs cost €5–10 more per month. Worth it if you are not sure how long you will stay: cheaper than breaking a 24-month contract early.
