Can my electricity be cut off while switching providers in Germany?
No. Under §36 EnWG the default supplier must supply you without interruption. The switch is seamless — worst case, you simply stay in Grundversorgung.
What are bonus traps (Neukundenbonus) in German electricity tariffs?
Many tariffs lure you with a first-year bonus, after which the price jumps. Look at the second-year price — or switch annually, which is completely normal in Germany.
I just arrived in Germany and have no SCHUFA — will I get an electricity contract?
Yes. Most electricity providers do not require a credit history. Occasionally a deposit may be requested.
How much does electricity cost per month for one person in Germany?
Rule of thumb: 1 person ≈ 1,500 kWh a year, i.e. €45–65 per month depending on the tariff. A family of 3–4: 3,500–4,500 kWh (€100–150/month). Grundversorgung charges 20–40% more for the same usage.
Do I have to cancel my old electricity contract when moving?
When moving you have a special termination right (§41b EnWG) if your old supplier does not serve the new address or changes conditions. Notify them in writing with your move-out date and meter reading.
What should I do with the meter reading when moving in?
Photograph the meter (reading + Zählernummer) on key-handover day and record both in the Übergabeprotokoll. That is your only proof you are not paying for the previous tenant's usage.
Is it cheaper to get electricity and gas from the same provider?
Not necessarily. Combined packages can be good, but two separate best-in-class tariffs are often cheaper. Compare separately by PLZ — gas tariffs vary more than electricity.
