Is leaving the country grounds for early termination? ▾
Often yes: many contracts (internet, gym, sometimes rent via a replacement tenant) grant a special termination right on moving abroad. Attach the deregistration certificate as proof — it replaces the usual notice periods.
What to cancel first? ▾
The recurring debits: rent, internet/mobile, insurance, gym, electricity/gas, broadcast fee. Every open contract keeps debiting from abroad for months.
My internet contract runs another year — can I really cancel? ▾
Yes: when moving somewhere the provider cannot serve (abroad always qualifies), the special termination right applies with 1 month notice (§ 60(2) TKG). Attach the deregistration certificate.
What about health insurance? ▾
Public insurance ends automatically with your employment/departure — but notify the fund in writing with the date and certificate, or contributions may keep accruing.
And the broadcasting fee? ▾
Deregister online at rundfunkbeitrag.de with the certificate attached — effective the month after you move out.
