Leaving Germany costs the most for those who leave quietly. Contracts keep running, charges keep being taken, post keeps going to an address where you no longer live β and a year later it all comes back as a debt collection letter. This route closes a departure so that nothing is left open behind you.

It all starts with one piece of paper. Deregistration at the BΓΌrgeramt is free, filed no earlier than a week before departure and no later than two weeks after, and the resulting Abmeldebescheinigung unlocks the whole chain that follows: with it, internet, mobile and gym contracts can be terminated early under special cancellation rights rather than the standard notice period. Take three or four copies straight away β requesting it from abroad is far harder.
Two decisions save the most money. First: do not close your German account immediately β deposit refunds, utility reconciliations and tax refunds arrive over months, so keep the account open for at least six months and close it last. Second: 24 months after leaving, check your entitlement to a refund of pension contributions β if you move outside the EU and no social security agreement applies, the employee's share comes back, 9.3 per cent of gross pay across all your working years.

- Leaving without collecting the Abmeldebescheinigung. Without it, providers and insurers cancel not early but at the standard notice period β meaning you pay for an address you no longer live at. Requesting it from abroad turns into a quest.
- Closing the German account right after departure. Final bills, deposit refunds and tax refunds arrive over months, and without an account the money simply has nowhere to go.
- Leaving for eight months without telling anyone. Under Β§51 AufenthG most residence titles and permanent residence lapse after more than six months' absence β automatically, without any letter. Anyone planning to return files an application for extended absence BEFORE leaving.
- Leaving no reachable address for the pension insurer and the tax office. Decisions and refunds come by post, and one undeliverable letter delays payment by months β so set up international mail forwarding and, if possible, name a trusted person in Germany.

How many months ahead should preparations start?βΎ
Three to four. The longest notice period belongs to the flat: termination goes out three months ahead by registered mail. Everything else follows your departure date β deregistration within the window of one week before to two weeks after, while special cancellations of telecoms contracts run on a one-month notice, but only once you hold the Abmeldebescheinigung.
In what order should contracts be cancelled?βΎ
The flat first, as it has the longest notice period. Then everything else by list: the easiest way to build it is from a year of bank statements, where every standing order and direct debit shows up, attaching a copy of the deregistration certificate to each cancellation. The bank account is closed last, after all final statements have arrived.
What money can be recovered on departure?βΎ
At least three things. The rental deposit, usually three to six months after moving out. The utilities reconciliation, if your advance payments exceeded actual costs. And a tax refund for the year of departure, since tax was withheld as though for a full year. On top of that, a pension contribution refund after 24 months if you live outside the EU and no social security agreement applies.

The decisive threshold is six months of absence: beyond it most permits and permanent residence lapse by themselves, with no notification. For a longer absence with a valid reason β study, work, family β you apply to the immigration office to preserve the permit, and that has to happen before you leave, not after.
