Where to go in your city →

BAföG is a social right, not a merit scholarship: nobody checks grades (except one progress certificate after semester 4). Half the money is a grant; the loan half is interest-free and capped at 10 010 € no matter how much you received.

I thought parental income would kill it — applied on a hunch and got 620 € a month. The bafoeg-rechner.de calculator matched reality in 5 minutes. Do not self-reject.

Parent-independent BAföG is the underrated route: after 5 years of work before studying, parental income counts for nothing. Check your work history before collecting their documents.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

My parents earn well — pointless to apply?

Not necessarily: allowances are high and split among several studying children. Parent-independent BAföG (after 5 years of work or from age 30) ignores parents entirely.

I am 46 — definitely too late?

The 45-year limit at study start is strict, but exceptions exist: second educational path, raising children, delay through no fault of yours. Ask the BAföG office about your case before giving up.

I have a side job — will BAföG shrink?

A mini-job within the current threshold is not counted. Earnings above it are offset gradually.

My parents refuse to share income documents?

File a Vorausleistungsantrag: the office pays you first and settles the matter with your parents itself.
