BAföG: Student Funding

Up to 992 € per month from the state: half is a grant, half an interest-free loan capped at 10 010 € repayment. Many foreign residents qualify too.

✓ Checked: 18/07/2026

State student support is half a gift: one part of the payment is never repaid, the other is an interest-free loan with a statutory repayment ceiling. Even the repayable half therefore costs less than any credit, and you never repay more than the maximum.

More about this route

This two-step route covers everything: who qualifies — including many foreign nationals, which few people know — and how to apply through the digital service without the usual delays.

The biggest mistake is not applying at all, having decided on the authority’s behalf that you would be refused. Entitlement depends on parental income, your residence permit and your form of study, and giving up on instinct costs students thousands of euros over their years of study.

WHERE PEOPLE MOST OFTEN LOSE MONEY AND TIME

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ROUTE

Do foreign students qualify?

Many do, and this is the most common misconception. Entitlement depends on your residence permit and your ties to Germany, and a substantial share of those living here with family or on settled status fall within it. Check your specific case.

How much has to be repaid?

Half of what you received, interest-free and subject to a statutory ceiling. Anything paid beyond that ceiling is never repaid, and repayment begins only some years after your studies end.

When should I apply?

As early as possible, because support runs from the month of application. There is no need to wait for admission or the start of lectures: apply in advance and supply missing documents later.

What if I am refused?

Read the reasoning and lodge an objection within the deadline, enclosing the missing evidence. Some refusals rest on incomplete income data and are resolved with documents rather than argument.
