I checked all conditions by checklist before applying: period, B1 language, test, self-support, no serious convictions. One unmet point turns the whole application back.
Fines up to 90 daily rates usually do not block naturalisation, higher sentences do. With a conviction, counselling before applying saves months and the fee.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The 2024 reform — how many years now? ▾
The 2024 reform dropped the general period to 5 years, and dual citizenship is now generally allowed. The former 3-year route for special integration achievements was abolished on 08.10.2025. The only path shorter than 5 years today is being the spouse of a German citizen (§ 9 StAG, 3 years).
Self-support — how strict? ▾
You must support yourself and family without Buergergeld (with exceptions: not your fault, full-time workers etc.). Check your case — a frequent rejection cause.
Must I give up my former citizenship? ▾
Under the 2024 reform generally no: multiple citizenship is allowed. This removes the main barrier that stopped applicants for years.
Do I have to give up my old passport? ▾
No: since the 2024 reform, multiple citizenship is allowed without conditions. Only check your home country law.
Does study time count towards the 5 years? ▾
Yes — for citizenship every lawful residence period counts in full, including student permits.
What about the 3 years for special integration? ▾
Abolished by the law of 8 October 2025. The only shorter path: spouses of Germans — 3 years (§ 9 StAG).
