HU/TÜV: technical inspection for your imported car

If your vehicle has no valid inspection sticker, a Hauptuntersuchung (HU) is required before registration. Nothing exotic — it's the same standard inspection as for any German car.

WHAT TO DO

AUTHORITY

TÜV / DEKRA (Technische Prüfstellen)

Private company

They run the theory and practical tests. The Fahrerlaubnisbehörde assigns the specific test centre by Prüfauftrag — you cannot pick it yourself.

Is this step required for you?

Skip it if: your car has a valid EU inspection sticker and your Zulassungsstelle confirms they’ll accept it. One phone call saves you a redundant appointment.

How it works

Standard HU — no difference from what German cars go through every 2 years. Book online at TÜV, DEKRA, GTÜ or KÜS, select “Hauptuntersuchung”, show up. 30–60 minutes, result on the spot.

If defects are found

You’ll receive a written report. Minor defects (geringe Mängel): HU passes, fix within a set period. Significant defects (erhebliche Mängel): fix first, then a re-inspection (Nachprüfung).

I chose GTÜ over TÜV — €30 cheaper, appointment the next day instead of two weeks out. The inspection quality is identical, GTÜ is equally state-accredited.

I brought the car in dirty — the inspector couldn't read the VIN through the grime and moved me to the next slot. Wash the car before going. Genuinely useful advice.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need a German HU if the car just passed an equivalent inspection abroad?

Germany officially recognises valid EU inspection certificates. In practice, different Zulassungsstellen handle this differently — some accept an Austrian § 57a or Polish przegląd, others insist on a German HU. Call your local Zulassungsstelle to confirm before booking.

How do I get the car to the inspection without plates?

Two options: (1) Kurzzeitkennzeichen — 5-day temporary plates from the Zulassungsstelle, €12–25. (2) Transport on a trailer or flatbed.

What does the HU check?

Brakes, lights, steering, exhaust, chassis, glass, tyres, seat belts, electrics. No additional requirements for imported vehicles — the same inspection as for any German car.
