Dog: Chip and Database Registration

The microchip is mandatory in many states, and database registration (Tasso, Findefix) is free and finds a lost dog. Plus the EU pet passport for travel.

WHAT TO DO

The chip is the document; the database registration is what actually brings the dog back. The difference is critical: thousands of chipped but unregistered dogs fail to reach their owners each year simply because the number is linked to nothing.

Max recommends:

I registered the chip with Tasso the day I picked up the puppy — 10 minutes online, free. A year later a neighbour found the escaped dog in an hour thanks to exactly that record.

Planning EU travel? Get the pet passport with a current rabies vaccination a month ahead: the shot must mature 21 days before entering another EU country.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are the chip and the tax tag the same?

No: the tax tag is about city tax, the chip about nationwide and EU identification. Both needed, they do not replace each other.

The dog is chipped but not in Tasso — is that not enough?

No: a chip without database registration is useless when found — the scanner shows the number but not your contacts. Registration is free and done online in 10 minutes.

Moved or changed number — must I update?

Absolutely: outdated Tasso contacts are the main reason chipped dogs are not returned. Update the data at every move.
