Found KiSt in my first payslip — the tick was registration autopilot. Check your payslip now: the line hides between abbreviations.

Decide without haste: leaving is practically final. The middle path for believers: stay and deduct church tax as special expenses in the return.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Baptised as a child abroad — does Germany know?

Only if you declared the confession at registration. German churches treat baptism as membership — with konfessionslos stated, questions rarely arise.

I do not remember what I ticked at registration.

Check your payslip: a value in the KiSt line means the tax is running. Or ask the tax office for your recorded confession.

I never attend church — why am I paying?

The tax follows formal membership, not attendance. If you stated a denomination at registration (or arrived baptised), the Finanzamt withholds automatically.

I was recorded by mistake — what now?

If you were never a member, contest it at the Finanzamt with proof from your home country. If membership formally exists, only the official exit (Kirchenaustritt) ends it.
