GdB: Applying to the Versorgungsamt

The degree of disability is assessed by the Versorgungsamt from medical records. From 50 you get the card and schwerbehindert status. Chronic illnesses count too.

WHAT TO DO

AUTHORITY

Versorgungsamt / Amt für soziale Angelegenheiten

Federal agency

The disability card (assessment of the GdB under SGB IX) is issued by the Versorgungsamt or state office of your Bundesland.

Many people live with chronic conditions for years without knowing an official status with tangible benefits is theirs to claim. The application is free, a rejection has no consequences, and for German doctors such reports are routine.

Max recommends:

I gathered current doctor reports BEFORE applying and asked them to describe everyday limitations, not just diagnoses. The office decides on paper — the more specific, the higher the GdB. I had no examination at all.

Lea recommends:

The employer need not know the status: asking in an interview is illegal, and after hiring it is your choice. Many disclose after probation, when 5 extra vacation days and protection kick in.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I got GdB 30, not 50 — wasted effort? ▾

No: from GdB 30 you can request equal status from the employment agency — dismissal protection as with 50. And contest the low rating: a third of objections succeed.

I have diabetes / migraine / depression — does that even count? ▾

Yes: a GdB is granted for chronic illness, not only visible impairments. Insulin-dependent diabetes, severe migraine, treated depression — all assessed by their everyday impact.

Will my employer find out? ▾

Only from you. The question is illegal in job interviews; after 6 months in the job it may be asked.
