Professional liability insurance
Who must have it, why private liability does not replace it, what pure financial loss means, and how to act when a claim arrives.

Professional liability in Germany is strict: whoever causes loss in the course of work makes it good, and does so from their own assets. For some professions insurance against that risk is required by statute or chamber as a condition of practising; for everyone else it is voluntary β and that is where loss most often ends up uncovered.
βΊ More about this route
This three-step route covers the question in full: for whom cover is compulsory and why private liability insurance does not replace it, what the policy actually covers and where its limits run, and finally buying it together with how to behave when a client first makes a claim.
The decisive point for advisory professions is cover for pure financial loss. That means loss without damage to property or persons: a clientβs lost profit, a failed project, a miscalculation. For translators, IT specialists and consultants that is precisely the type that arises β and not every policy includes it.
WHERE PEOPLE MOST OFTEN LOSE MONEY AND TIME
- Assuming private liability insurance covers work too. It expressly excludes damage from professional activity β the most common and most expensive misconception.
- Describing your activity imprecisely in the policy. What is declared is covered, not what you actually do: expansions belong reported, and that takes one message.
- Admitting fault in conversation with a client. An admission can cost you cover; assessing whether a claim is justified is the insurerβs job.
- Buying cover only once an unhappy client has appeared. Circumstances known at inception are excluded, and that case stays uncovered.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ROUTE
For whom is professional liability cover compulsory?βΎ
For several regulated professions: doctors, lawyers, tax advisers, and in some cases architects and engineers. The duty follows from statute or chamber rules, and without proof of cover practice is not permitted.
Does private liability insurance not cover work mistakes?βΎ
No. It covers damage in private life and expressly excludes professional activity. One policy does not replace the other, and this is usually discovered at the first claim.
What sum insured makes sense?βΎ
It should reflect the loss you could theoretically cause rather than your turnover. Regulated professions have statutory minimums; otherwise project size is the yardstick.
What does such cover usually cost?βΎ
The price depends on the occupation, turnover and the sum insured chosen, and the spread between professions is wide. A figure quoted by someone in another field is therefore of little use: the premium is calculated from your own description of activities.
