Studying in Germany with a foreign school-leaving certificate is not a single application but a chain: checking whether your qualification is recognised, applying through the central service or directly, the visa, and finally enrolment once you are here.

This three-step route follows that chain: applying within the hard deadlines for winter and summer semesters, obtaining admission together with a visa and proof of funding, and arriving and enrolling, after which study at public universities remains practically free.
The decisive fork at the start is whether your certificate suffices for direct university entry. If not, the path leads through a preparatory college with its own final examination β better learned a year ahead than a month before the deadline.
WHERE PEOPLE MOST OFTEN LOSE MONEY AND TIME
- Working to the universityβs deadline while forgetting the central verification serviceβs processing time. It takes weeks, so submit considerably earlier.
- Not checking recognition of your certificate. Otherwise you prepare documents for direct entry where a preparatory college comes first.
- Postponing proof of funding. The visa requires it, and opening a blocked account takes time in itself.
- Treating enrolment as automatic after admission. It is a separate step with its own deadlines, fee and documents once you arrive.

Do I apply directly or through the central service?βΎ
It depends on the university: some accept applications only through the central verification service, some directly, and a few combine both. Check this for each institution separately before assembling documents.
What if my school certificate is not sufficient?βΎ
Then the path runs through a preparatory college with a final examination replacing the missing part of school education. That adds roughly a year to your plan, which is why recognition belongs checked early.
Is it true that studying is free?βΎ
Public universities in most federal states charge no tuition fees, but there is a semester contribution covering administration and often a transport pass. It is not tuition, but it belongs in your budget.
When should I open a blocked account?βΎ
As soon as it is clear a visa will be needed: opening and funding it take time, and without proof of funding the visa application will not be accepted. It is one of the most common sources of delay.
