Contents Insurance (Hausratversicherung)
Hausrat covers everything movable in your apartment — furniture, clothing, laptops, TVs. It reimburses their value if they are damaged by fire, burst pipes, storms, or if your apartment is burgled.
1. What is it and when do I need it?
- •Purpose: Insurance for all movable belongings in your apartment against destruction or theft (Einbruchdiebstahl).
- •Timing: Worth getting once the value of your belongings becomes significant (good furniture, expensive electronics).
2. How much does it cost and where to get it?
- •Price: Depends on apartment size. Typically €30–80 per year.
- •Where: Online via comparison portals, or directly with your insurer (often a discount if Haftpflicht is with the same provider).
3. What to check (Checklist)
- State the correct apartment size — this determines the insured sum
- Store receipts for expensive items (laptop, camera) in cloud storage
- Add the "Fahrraddiebstahl" option if you want bikes covered against street theft
4. Common mistakes
Achtung / Warning: Under-insurance (Unterversicherung): If you set the coverage amount too low to save a few euros, the insurer will only pay proportionally in the event of a claim. Standard rule: €650 of coverage per square meter of living space.
