Economist: degree recognition in Germany

🟢 The state does not require any recognition from you.

This profession is not regulated. There is no authority that must recognise your degree and no procedure you must complete. Hiring is decided by the employer alone.

Economics and business degrees — management, finance, economics — are not regulated. There is no procedure and no authority. What matters is the boundary below: certain activities in this field are very much regulated, and then it is the activity, not your degree, that decides.

Who decides

ZAB — Central Office for Foreign Education

What to do

  1. As a controller, analyst, finance manager or in-house accountant: nothing to apply for. Check anabin, get a ZAB statement for €208 if needed, done.
  2. The moment you want to advise on tax matters commercially, § 3 StBerG applies: that is reserved for tax advisors and cannot be reached through a degree.
  3. The same holds for auditing under the Public Accountants Act — again a separate route into another profession, not a recognition procedure.
  4. For a visa or Blue Card: a recognised or comparable higher-education degree under § 18 (3) no. 2 AufenthG, in practice anabin H+ or a ZAB statement.

Where people get stuck

The trap is not the degree but the job description: anyone wanting to prepare other people’s tax returns as a self-employed consultant enters regulated territory — however good their diploma. That is not a recognition question but a question of access to a different profession.

If you still need to immigrate

For a visa or the Blue Card a recognised or comparable higher-education degree is enough (§ 18 (3) no. 2 AufenthG) — in practice anabin H+ or a ZAB statement. For the Blue Card the ZAB issues the statement in two weeks instead of three months.

Frequently asked

Will my economics degree be recognised in Germany?

It does not need to be, because the profession is not regulated. What counts is comparability in the eyes of an employer and the immigration office: anabin H+ or the ZAB statement for €208.

Can I work as an accountant with my degree?

Employed bookkeeping inside a company is free. Commercial tax assistance for third parties is not — § 3 StBerG requires appointment as a tax advisor for that.

Is the ZAB statement worth it if nobody asks for it?

Rarely for applications, often for visas and dealings with authorities. If your university appears in anabin with H+, save the €208 — the printout does the same job.
