› Details and tips
I booked the notice early — in popular registry offices appointments and the wedding are booked months ahead. I kept the ceremony date within 6 months of the notice so documents would not expire.
Want to marry in another city? File the notice at your own registry office and marry elsewhere — have the notice forwarded. This opens up beautiful town halls for the ceremony.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Must both come to the marriage notice? ▾
As a rule yes, both in person. If one cannot, a power of attorney may work — clarify with the registry office in advance; practice varies, and without the right form the visit falls through.
How long is the notice valid until the wedding? ▾
Usually 6 months: the ceremony must happen within it. If not, the procedure and some documents must be renewed — book the date close to the notice.
Can we marry somewhere other than where we live? ▾
Yes: you register at your local Standesamt but can hold the ceremony at any registry office in Germany — the file is forwarded.
My partner is still abroad — how do we file? ▾
One partner can file alone with a notarised declaration (Beitrittserklärung) of the other. For the fiancé visa the registration confirmation is the key document.
Do we need an interpreter? ▾
If one partner does not understand German well enough, the Standesamt requires a sworn interpreter at the filing and the ceremony — you arrange it, €100–200.
