Kfz-Ummeldung: Re-registering Your Car
Deadline: 1 week after changing address. Fine up to €500 for missing it. Visit the Zulassungsstelle at your new location.
WHAT TO DO
What is it and when to do it?
When you move to a different Zulassungsbezirk, you must re-register your vehicle at the new address. The deadline is 1 week from your Anmeldung date (§13 FZV). Your car insurance is tied to your registered address, and a mismatch can cause complications in the event of a claim.
Where and how much does it cost?
Re-registration is done in person at the Zulassungsstelle (vehicle licensing office) covering your new address. The admin fee is €10–30. If you need new number plates, add roughly €20–30 for the plates themselves. Book an appointment online in advance to avoid long waits.
Common mistakes
Moved to Munich and left the car unregistered for 2 months. Stopped by police — €100 fine and an order to re-register. A week later, another check — €500 fine. One week's delay turned into a serious problem.
Booked an appointment at the Zulassungsstelle but showed up with the old Personalausweis (old address, no Meldebescheinigung). The appointment couldn't proceed and I had to start over. The Meldebescheinigung with your new address is a mandatory document — don't go without it.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How long do I have to re-register my car after moving? ▾
Under §13(2) FZV you must notify the Zulassungsstelle within one week of changing your address. The fine for missing this deadline can be up to €500. The re-registration is done at the Zulassungsstelle covering your new address, not the old one.
Do I need to change my number plates when I move? ▾
Not necessarily, if you stay within the same Zulassungsbezirk (vehicle registration district). Moving to a different region (e.g. from Berlin to Munich) means your plates must be swapped for ones from the new district — this comes with additional costs of around €40–80.
What documents do I need for the Kfz-Ummeldung? ▾
Personalausweis or passport with Meldebescheinigung showing the new address; Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (vehicle registration certificate) and Teil II (vehicle title); valid insurance confirmation; SEPA mandate for the admin fee (€10–30). New plates only if the district changes.
