What is it and when to do it?

When you move to a different Zulassungsbezirk, you must re-register your vehicle at the new address. It must be reported without delay (§ 15 FZV) — the regulation sets no fixed one-week deadline. Your car insurance is tied to your registered address, and a mismatch can cause complications in the event of a claim.

Where and how much does it cost?

Re-registration is done in person at the Zulassungsstelle (vehicle licensing office) covering your new address. The admin fee is €10–30. If you need new number plates, add roughly €20–30 for the plates themselves. Book an appointment online in advance to avoid long waits.

Max recommends:

Moved to Munich and left the car re-registration for two months. The warning fine itself was small; the annoying part was what followed — the Zulassungsstelle set me a deadline, I let that pass too, and the cost of its formal order was added on top. Do it right after your Anmeldung; it takes half an hour.

Booked an appointment at the Zulassungsstelle but showed up with the old Personalausweis (old address, no Meldebescheinigung). The appointment couldn't proceed and I had to start over. The Meldebescheinigung with your new address is a mandatory document — don't go without it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long do I have to re-register my car after moving?

The governing rule is § 15 FZV ('notification duties on changes'), and it sets no one-week window — it says **unverzüglich**, without undue delay, with no fixed number of days in the law. In practice: go right after your Anmeldung. The penalty is far smaller than commonly claimed: a **€15** warning fine under no. 180 BKat. What actually gets expensive is ignoring the authority: if the Zulassungsstelle notices the outdated address, sets a deadline (usually four weeks) and you let it pass, the cost of its formal order is added. The re-registration is done at the Zulassungsstelle covering your new address, not the old one.

Do I need to change my number plates when I move?

Not necessarily, if you stay within the same Zulassungsbezirk (vehicle registration district). Moving to a different region (e.g. from Berlin to Munich) means your plates must be swapped for ones from the new district — this comes with additional costs of around €40–80.

What documents do I need for the Kfz-Ummeldung?

Personalausweis or passport with Meldebescheinigung showing the new address; Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (vehicle registration certificate) and Teil II (vehicle title); valid insurance confirmation; SEPA mandate for the admin fee (€10–30). New plates only if the district changes.
