German State Pension

How the German state pension works for immigrants: EU periods count, 5 years qualify you, and gaps can be closed with voluntary contributions. Myth-free.

βœ“ Checked: 18/07/2026

The German state pension often feels like someone else’s topic to people who moved here: β€œI arrived late, there is nothing in it for me.” In practice that is usually wrong. Working years in other EU states and in countries with a social security agreement count towards entitlement, and the minimum insurance period is modest.

  1. 1

    STEP

    Pension: Reading Your Renteninformation

Once a year the pension insurer sends a statement. Learning to read it is step one: it shows your periods, the forecast and the gaps you can still close.

  2. 2

    STEP

    Pension: Entitlement and Minimum Period

The old-age pension opens with the qualifying period β€” at least 5 years. EU periods count, and citizenship is irrelevant.

  3. 3

    STEP

    Pension: Closing the Gaps

Gaps cut your pension but can be closed: with voluntary contributions, buying back study years or child-raising credits. Small amounts have lifelong effect.

  4. 4

    STEP

    Pension: Applying and Receiving Abroad

The pension must be claimed β€” it does not start on its own. Apply about 3 months before your desired start. The German pension is paid to a foreign account too, including third countries.

β€Ί More about this route

This four-step route works through the subject in order: how to read the annual Renteninformation letter and what its figures mean, the conditions under which entitlement arises at all, how gaps in your insurance record can be closed, and how the application works β€” including from abroad.

One thing matters most: the pension account does not fill itself. Education, child-raising periods, work abroad and contribution-free periods only appear once you submit the evidence. Checking and completing the record pays off long before retirement, while the documents can still be obtained.

WHERE PEOPLE MOST OFTEN LOSE MONEY AND TIME

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ROUTE

Do working years in another country count?β–Ύ

For assessing entitlement yes, for EU states and countries with a social security agreement. Each country pays its own share though, for its own years and under its own rules.

How many years are needed for a pension entitlement?β–Ύ

As a rule five years of creditable periods, and those are not only contributions from salary. Child-raising periods and other creditable times count too, so the record deserves checking rather than guessing.

What can be done about gaps in the record?β–Ύ

They are closed with an account clarification application: you submit evidence of education, child-raising and employment, and the insurer adds the missing periods. Some gaps can be filled with voluntary contributions under certain conditions.
