ROUTE

Closing a trade or freelance activity cleanly

A registration does not lapse by itself: declarations, contributions and chamber fees run on. The order of deregistration, the one-month deadline and the years-long tail.

โœ“ Checked: 02/08/2026

Closing a business in Germany is quicker than starting one, which is exactly why it is often done carelessly. The registration lives on: while it stands, so do the duties โ€” declarations, health insurance contributions at the self-employed rate, chamber membership and fees. A dormant business with no turnover at all reliably generates correspondence and invoices.

  1. 1

    STEP

Trade or liberal profession: the deregistration differs

A Gewerbe and a liberal profession have different recipients. One is deregistered at the trade office, the other reported directly to the tax office.

  2. 2

    STEP

    Deregistering at the trade office

The notification goes through the same office and form as the registration. After that the data spreads by itself: chamber, accident insurance, customs.

  3. 3

    STEP

Tax office: notifying cessation and the closing declarations

The notification is due within a month. Then come the final declarations, and business assets move into private ownership โ€” a taxable event of its own.

  4. 4

    STEP

Health insurance, pension and chamber after closing

Your health insurance status does not change by itself. While the fund still lists you as self-employed, contributions run at that rate.

  5. 5

    STEP

Loose ends: record keeping, accounts and a possible restart

Retention duties run on for years after closure. Alongside them sit small items that keep taking money: subscriptions, domains, the business account.

โ€บ More about this route

The chain depends on what is registered. A trade is deregistered at the same office that registered it, and from there the data spreads on its own: to the chamber, to the statutory accident insurance, to customs. A liberal profession bypasses that office and notifies cessation directly to the tax office. In both cases one month is allowed for the notification after the event.

This five-step route covers the closure in full: what exactly you are closing, how the deregistration works, what happens for tax and to business assets, whom you must write to yourself because they never find out otherwise, and what remains afterwards โ€” retention periods and small items that keep taking money.

WHERE PEOPLE MOST OFTEN LOSE MONEY AND TIME

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ROUTE

Where does a closure sensibly begin?โ–พ

With checking what is registered in your name and choosing the cessation date. Every later notification must carry the same date, otherwise the offices end up contradicting one another.

How long does a closure take overall?โ–พ

The deregistration itself is a single appointment; full completion stretches to the last return for the year of cessation. In practice that means several months into the following tax year.

Is a tax adviser needed for closing?โ–พ

With a small turnover and no business assets, usually not. It pays where equipment, a vehicle or stock remain: their transfer into private ownership forms a separate profit, and valuation matters more than the saving.

What if invoices keep arriving after the closure?โ–พ

Check the date they cover and compare it with the deregistration confirmation. Contributions for the period before it are legitimate; anything after is disputed by attaching that confirmation.
