The Abmeldebescheinigung is the most underrated document of your departure: insurers, gyms, internet providers and banks will ask for it. Without it, every cancellation becomes a letter exchange.

› Details and tips
I deregistered 3 days before the flight and got the certificate at once — without it insurers and the bank would not cancel contracts on grounds of leaving. One paper opens the whole cancellation chain.
Get the deregistration certificate immediately and in several copies: requesting it from abroad is a quest. It also proves the end of tax residency.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is deregistration mandatory when leaving Germany? ▾
Yes: deregistration at the citizens office is mandatory when moving abroad. Without it, the broadcast fee and taxes keep running and offices count you as resident. You can deregister up to 1 week before and within 2 weeks after leaving.
Can I deregister from abroad if I've already left? ▾
Yes: most cities accept the Abmeldung by letter, email, or online with a passport copy. Doing it in person before departure is still faster, since you get the Abmeldebescheinigung on the spot — you'll need it to cancel contracts and as proof of your departure date.
Why deregister at all? ▾
Without it, the broadcasting fee and church tax keep accruing, special termination rights do not apply, and the tax office treats you as resident. The certificate is your proof for everyone.
I'm keeping my apartment but only travelling abroad for a few months — do I still have to deregister? ▾
Not necessarily: the deregistration duty under § 17(2) BMG only applies if you move out of your home and don't take up a new one in Germany. If your lease continues and you don't give up the apartment, you haven't legally moved out, so no Abmeldung is needed. But once the apartment is given up, deregistration is required regardless of how long the trip abroad is.
Lost the deregistration certificate — how to replace it from abroad? ▾
Request a Meldebescheinigung über die Abmeldung from the Bürgeramt of your last address: by letter or email with a passport copy and your foreign address. Unlike the deregistration itself, the duplicate usually costs about 5–10 €.
